I am a freelance photographer and I love it like this! I am a musician first which I feel, in my own way, is very similar to photography. The creative and compositional aspect of it, the short amount of time you have to get a shot or a difficult musical passage right, and most importantly - the gratification of seeing the final product and playing the final chord of a song.
I have read on many sites that if you want a great job done that you should hire a "professional" for the job. I agree to a point. I am not a professional by definition which means I don't use photography as my main source of income. I have much less to lose than a professional photographer because my full time job as a high school music teacher pays my bills. For this aspect, I am not a pro. However, I have a creative and good eye and will chase down shots until I get it, I am a perfectionist, I will work very hard to do the best job that I can for you (something pros do), and I have a lot of passion for my craft (something not all pros have).
Since being a photographer isn't my "job", it will never feel like one whch is better for the end result. I have worked too many events as a videographer where I have seen disgruntled photographers who don't enjoy what they do. I enjoy every second of it! I groove to the music that is playing, I interact with the guests, and I have a great time like everyone else! Happiness and energy are infectious to clients and I feel that it shows in my pictures and videos.
To be fair and honest, there is truth to the "hiring a pro" philosophy because just with experience, pros do a GREAT JOB! If you feel that your needs will be served best by a pro, by all means...HIRE ONE! But if you're on a budget and want great quality work done for the money, shoot me an e-mail or call me!
